Biography

Dr. Julia Loewenthal, MD
One of Dr. Loewenthal’s first impressions of medicine came from visiting her grandfather, a rural family medicine physician who made housecalls with a worn black medical bag. She was interested in science and health from an early age, engaging deeply with these interests through exercise, yoga practice, and then undergraduate training in Nutritional Biochemistry at UNC Chapel Hill.
Inspired to work directly with patients for health optimization, Dr. Loewenthal completed her Internal Medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. However, she quickly realized that medicine followed a “problem-based” approach. Through her training in integrative and geriatric medicine, she brings a holistic approach to patient care. As a primary care physician who is board-certified in Internal Medicine, she brings together high-quality primary care and longevity expertise for patients of all ages to maximize both healthspan and lifespan. In addition, she is board-certified in Geriatric Medicine, which helps her support older patients at all stages of aging, including those navigating issues like frailty or cognitive impairment.
Over the course of her career, Dr. Loewenthal has practiced in multiple clinical settings, caring for patients with a wide range of medical complexity. She has extensive experience coordinating care across specialties and settings, including patients’ home environments, outpatient clinics, independent and assisted living facilities, nursing homes, rehabs, and inpatient hospitals. This breadth of experience has reinforced her belief that excellent primary care requires time, continuity, and a deep understanding of each patient’s goals, values, and life circumstances. Dr. Loewenthal believes the physician-patient relationship and the ability to incorporate a flexible, longitudinal approach is what makes the biggest difference for patients.
Dr. Loewenthal is particularly passionate about geriatric medicine and the art of caring for older adults. She emphasizes maintaining independence, function, and quality of life, recognizing that health priorities evolve over time. “Good medicine isn’t just about more testing and diagnostics, it’s about tailoring the care to patient’s needs and values as they change over time.”
Teaching and education are central to Dr. Loewenthal’s work. She serves as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and is deeply involved in teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows. She believes that patients, like trainees, are best served when they understand the reasoning behind medical decisions and feel empowered to participate actively in their care.
Dr. Loewenthal also has advanced training in integrative medicine. She is an Osher Collaborative Faculty Fellow with pending board certification in Integrative Medicine, has trained at the Osher Clinical Center for Integrative Health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, is a 200-hour certified yoga teacher, and is a SMART group visit provider through the MGH Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine. Her academic work has been recognized with several honors, including the HRSA Geriatric Academic Career Award, the Harvard Medical School Osher Center for Integrative Health Pilot Research Award, an NIA-funded Boston Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center pilot award, and the Annals of Internal Medicine Early Career Investigator Award.
She brings an integrative lens to every patient interaction, often encouraging lifestyle or complementary health approaches prior to medications or procedures. In addition, with her background in nutritional biochemistry and integrative medicine, she incorporates nutritional and functional testing where appropriate. With her academic background, she carefully evaluates the latest research with patients and enjoys the collaborative process of learning with and from her patients.
Dr. Loewenthal practices at Lutanen Health, a physician-owned concierge internal medicine and geriatrics practice designed around small patient panels, extended visits, and proactive, relationship-based care. This model allows her to anticipate health concerns early, think longitudinally, and partner closely with patients over time. She also provides home visits for select patients when appropriate, ensuring care remains highly personalized. This model maximizes each patient’s potential for longevity through the full spectrum of young adulthood to old age.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Loewenthal values time with family and friends, movement and yoga, and quiet moments that help her reset. These practices remind her of the very lessons she hopes her patients experience as well: presence, resilience, and the possibility of aging with intention.
